Manchester United v Bayern Munich · Champions League final · 1999
Football, Bloody Hell: Camp Nou, 1999
Manchester United were a goal down to Bayern Munich as the 1999 Champions League final went into stoppage time. Two corners later they had won it, and with it the Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and European Cup.
Ten days, three trophies
United won the Premier League on 16 May and the FA Cup on 22 May. The European Cup final in Barcelona four days later was the last piece, but they had to play it without Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, both suspended.
Bayern in control
Mario Basler's free kick put Bayern ahead in the sixth minute. Bayern hit the post and the bar in the second half, and as the clock ran down UEFA's president, Lennart Johansson, left his seat to go down and present the trophy.
Stoppage time
From a corner, with Peter Schmeichel up in the box, Ryan Giggs scuffed a shot and Teddy Sheringham turned it in. From the next corner, Sheringham flicked on and Ole Gunnar Solskjær stabbed it into the roof of the net. Johansson arrived pitchside to find, in his words, the winners crying and the losers dancing. Alex Ferguson's verdict was three words: football, bloody hell.
