Moscow and Munich: Drogba and Chelsea

In 2008 Didier Drogba was sent off before the penalty he was meant to take, and Chelsea lost the Champions League final by one slip. In 2012 he scored the equaliser two minutes from time and took the last kick of the shoot-out himself.

Moscow, 2008

The first all-English Champions League final was played in heavy rain at the Luzhniki. Cristiano Ronaldo and Frank Lampard traded goals, and deep into extra time Drogba slapped Nemanja Vidić and was sent off. Chelsea's fifth penalty should have been his. John Terry took it instead, slipped as he struck it and hit the post. Edwin van der Sar then saved from Nicolas Anelka, and Manchester United were champions.

Four years later

Chelsea reached the 2012 final under caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo, without the suspended Terry, and had to face Bayern Munich in Bayern's own stadium.

Munich, 2012

Thomas Müller headed Bayern in front in the 83rd minute. Two minutes from time, Chelsea won their only corner of the night, and Drogba met Juan Mata's delivery with a thundering header past Manuel Neuer. In extra time Petr Čech saved Arjen Robben's penalty. In the shoot-out Drogba took the last kick, sent Neuer the wrong way, and won Chelsea their first European Cup.
