Corner Taken Quickly: Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona

"Corner taken quickly" is the phrase that describes Liverpool's winning goal against Barcelona at Anfield on 7 May 2019. Trent Alexander-Arnold took a corner while Barcelona's players had their backs turned, and Divock Origi scored to complete a 4-0 win that overturned a 3-0 first-leg defeat.

Camp Nou: Messi's 600th

Liverpool played well in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final but lost 3-0. Luis Suárez scored against his old club, and Lionel Messi added two late goals. The second, a free kick from around 30 yards that curled into the top corner, was his 600th goal for Barcelona. Our poster Messi's 600th Goal is frame one of the story.

Anfield without Salah and Firmino

Liverpool faced the second leg without Mohamed Salah, who was concussed, and Roberto Firmino, who was injured. Divock Origi scored after seven minutes. At half-time Jürgen Klopp brought on Georginio Wijnaldum for the injured Andy Robertson, and early in the second half Wijnaldum scored twice in two minutes. 3-3 on aggregate.

The corner

In the 79th minute Liverpool won a corner on the right. Alexander-Arnold placed the ball and started to walk away, then spotted that Barcelona's defenders had switched off. He turned and whipped it low into the six-yard box, where Origi, the only player paying attention, swept it into the net. It took a few seconds for the stadium to understand what had happened.

What it meant

A year earlier Barcelona had thrown away a 4-1 lead against Roma; now it happened again. For Liverpool, Anfield 2019 joined Istanbul 2005 among the club's great European nights. They went on to beat Tottenham 2-0 in the final in Madrid to win their sixth European Cup.
