Michael Ballack · Germany v South Korea · 2002 World Cup semi-final
The Eternal Runner-Up
Ballack went on to play a lead role in helping to take Germany through the knockout rounds in search of total redemption on the global stage, and in the semi-final he committed a tactical, sacrificial foul to save his country (earning a yellow card suspension in the process), scoring the winning goal minutes later; on the final day the world's most tragic midfielder was relegated to the sidelines in a tracksuit as Brazil took the world.

About this moment
Seoul, 25 June 2002. In the World Cup semi-final against co-hosts South Korea, Michael Ballack stopped a breakaway with a tactical foul, knowing the yellow card would rule him out of the final. Minutes later he scored the only goal of the game to send Germany through without him.
The final frame of our Michael Ballack 2002 story, and one of the great acts of selflessness in World Cup history, as a framed football poster.
