The Hand of God: Maradona, 1986
Diego Maradona · Argentina v England · 1986 World Cup quarter-final
Divine Intervention
Mexico City, 22 June 1986, a World Cup quarter-final four years after the Falklands War. Six minutes into the second half, Steve Hodge sliced a clearance back towards his own goal, and Diego Maradona, a head shorter than Peter Shilton, beat him to it with his left fist. The referee gave the goal. Maradona said it was scored a little with his head and a little with the hand of God. Framed, matted, ready to hang.
